Whether this is your first Tarot Deck or your twentieth (come on, raise your hands if you are a Tarot Deck hoarder like me!), choosing a deck to take home can be equally an exciting and nerve-wracking experience.
Whether you are drawn to Greek or Egyptian Mythology, Angels or Animals you will find a plethora of options out there.
Sometimes it can feel like being the proverbial child in a sweet shop…..so much choice….but you know you can’t have them all (one day maybe, but today is not that day)…….so which deck do you choose?
Here are some helpful tips that may help guide you in the right direction for you:
Choosing Your Tarot Deck is a Two-Way Street
Are you choosing your Tarot Deck, or is your Tarot Deck choosing you?
In actual fact, the acquiring process will be a good mixture of both. Much like your first meeting with a potential partner in life (whether business, friendship or in love), you will need experience that initial handshake of mind and soul.
Have you ever met someone in life that although they seem as nice as pie, there was just something that didn’t sit right with you? Perhaps a little off? There was no rhyme or reason to it, maybe it was even someone who everyone else raves about but for you, you’re not really that keen.
On the other hand, have you even met someone who you have instantly hit it off with? You recognise that they have their dark and light sides, but for you, you just know you would be great friends?
To then put a spanner in the works, there are those meetings where for your part, you are open and willing, and can see great potential in the partnership, but the other side just doesn’t feel the same.
Life is like that, and so are Tarot Cards. You will either get on, or you won’t. Don’t stress over it, just move onto the next deck and see what happens.
Whether you are looking at a shop shelf, stall, or pictures on an online shop or catalogue ask yourself this initial question:
Does the theme and artwork appeal to you?
If the answer is no, move swiftly on to the next hopeful.
If there is a spark of interest, you can then pause, and begin to examine the cards in more detail.
- Do any colours / imagery / symbols stand out to you?
- How does the general imagery make you feel?
- Are there any images you find you seem to connect with more than others?
- Does there seem to be a running story with this deck, or are they stand alone symbols or images?
- If the deck has sparked your interest, can you feel any interest from the deck in return?
If you have answered no to any of these questions, move on. Honestly, there is no hard feelings, you don’t need to go too deep at this stage as you will do that when you begin the bonding process.
What you are looking for now, before you decide to buy, is whether or not these are cards that would enable you both to positively work and grow together – just like a partner in life.
If you answered positively to all of those questions, they could just be the Tarot Cards you were looking for!
